Swedesurvey awarded new Russian contract
Swedesurvey has been awarded a contract to conduct training in Land Cadastre and Registration of Rights within the framework of the World Bank LARIS project. The training will be held in Sweden in late spring or autumn 2003.

This week Swedesurvey and Lantmäteriet, The National Land Survey of Sweden are pleased to welcome some people from Mongolia. They are Prof. Dr. Sh. Batsukh, Director of Administration of Land Affairs, Geodesy and Cartography, Mr B. Tumurkhuyag, Director of Capital City´s Land Relation, Geodesy and Cartography Agency Department, Mrs Shagdarsuren Enkhtsetseg, Project Director and Director of Land Information Center and Mr Batbileg Chinzorig, Interpreter and Project administrator.

A study visit of the Swedish Land Administration System and discussions about future co-operation between Mongolia and Sweden will take place during this week.

Recent visit from Indonesia

The Indonesian study group at Gävle Tax Board
Heads and experts from Badan Pertanahan National (BPN), the Indonesian National Land Agency, taking part in the INLA-project visit Sweden and France during two weeks. The INLA-project is a EU-financed project mainly dealing with development of land valuation methods in Indonesia. The European partners are IGN France and Swedesurvey. In Sweden the programme has included land policy and legislation, the land information system, ArcCadastre, methods and systems for property taxation, property formation and compensation. The main part of the project take place in Indonesia where there will be a pilot project concerning land valuation methods.

Swedesurvey is hosting Viet Nam delegation

Mr Mai Ai -Truc, Minister of Environment, Viet Nam, Mr Joakim Ollén, Director General, Lantmäteriet, The National Land Survey of Sweden, Mr Nguyen Dinh Bong, Director, Department of Finance and Planning, Viet Nam.
Mr Mai Ai Truc, newly appointed Minister of Environment, Viet Nam, is together with a delegation consisting of 10 persons visiting Swedesurvey and Lantmäteriet, The National Land Survey of Sweden in Gävle today.

During the stay in Sweden the delegation will also meet with the Swedish Minister of Environment Ms Lena Sommestad in Stockholm, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, the National Chemicals Inspectorate and Sida.

The purpose of the visit is to be acquainted with Swedish land administration and Swedish environmental issues. The Minister will also discuss forms for a continued co-operation between Sweden and Viet Nam in regard to environmental issues as well as land administration.

Swedesurvey assistance to Buffalo City Municipality
In Buffalo City Swedesurvey has been given the responsibility to assist Buffalo City Municipality, South Africa, in building a comprehensive GIS.

Within the project a long needed computer-training lab has now been established. The training took off January 13 and to date about 100 staff out of approximately 700 delegates who qualify for the training (staff who have access to computer equipment and who are permanent employees) has participated in one day GIS End User Training.
The focus of the one-day training is to give all Buffalo City Municipality employees the opportunity to get a good understanding of the IT and GIS facilities available including:

• Standards to be applied to documents.
• Differences between network and local drives.
• The correct way to structure folders.
• Data sharing.
• Procedures for fault reporting.
• Use of the corporate E-Mail
• Introduction to the Intranet.
• Use of the on-line telephone directory.
• Introduction to GISTEX
• Introduction to the IDP Home Page
• Finally there is an introduction to GIS with basic exercises, which outline the usefulness of GIS for management.

The PC-version of the Botswana National Atlas was launched at a gathering at Gaborone International Convention Centre in the evening 30 January, 2003 by the Minister for Ministry of Lands and Housing, Dr. Margret Nasha. The production of the PC-Atlas is a co-operation between Department of Surveys and Mapping (DSM), Botswana and Swedesurvey AB.

Swedesurvey hosting Master students from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, 4-7 February
Visitors from Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Thirty students from Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan are taking their Master's degree in Land Management at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.

Staff members from Swedesurvey conduct parts of their lectures and between 4 and 7 February the students are visiting Swedesurvey and the Headquarter of the National Land Survey of Sweden in Gävle. The objectives with the visit is to gain experience on what are the responsibilities and services that rest on the National Land Survey and how we operate to fulfil the needs and requirements from the customers. The students also visit the old map archive to compare old traditional mapping with state-of-the-art techniques, using ArcCadastre. In addition, they visit the municipality of Gävle, a bank and a real estate agency to get an insight in their needs of having easy access to the transparent property information, both geographical and semantic, hold by the National Land Survey.

The educational programme is carried out annually since 1996. Swedesurvey and KTH has together with the universities and land administration organisations in the respective country established a tight co-operation to support long-term sustainability and capacity development at both the universities and the land administration organisations. This is now beginning to bear fruit, exemplified by the large number of graduated students acquiring high-ranked positions in their respective motherland.

Study visit from Belarus
Since 1998 Swedesurvey is carrying out a project in co-operation with the Belarusian Republican Association "Land Reform", Minsk. The project is financed by Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). The objectives of the project are to facilitate the development of a Real Property Market.

This week 8 persons representing the Belarusian Duma, the National Land Survey of Belarus (Goscomzem) are visiting Swedesurvey and the National Land Survey to get more information about the Swedish Land Information System.

A couple of sceneries from the Petén province in Guatemala where Swedesurvey together with Finnmap, Finland and IGN, France submitted a tender for Mapping, Surveying and Tenure Clarification. A team from the Swedesurvey consortium finalized the tender on location during a couple of weeks in December 2002.
