Mr. Christer Kjörneberg, Swedesurvey, and Ing. Pedro Eslava Elajieck, Vicerector of Magdalena University, gave opening speeches at the SIG-OT training held for about 30 participants from 11 municipalities and regional authorities in Magdalena Departemento 30 – 31 May 2009 at Magdalena University in Santa Marta. The purpose of the training was to familiarize the participants about the portal and explore the usefulness of the system in various planning activities. To date 2,000 participants have been trained at national level and in the pilot region (Valle de Cauca, Cauca and Narino Departementos) within the SIG-OTproject.

The decision made by the National Council for Social and Economic Policies in May stating that SIG-OT, being a practical application of the policies of the Colombian Infrastructure of Spatial Data in terms of standards, metadata and web portals was warmly received and has now got official recognition as a national policy.
The efforts to create a corporate project shared by agencies and leading authorities at national, regional and local level have been recognized and rewarded. As a result of the decision the Project Management Group will design a strategic development and sustainability plan with a planning horizon stretching until 2019 and aimed at strengthening the system as a tool to contribute to efficient and timely decision making for authorities and planning bodies at national, departmental and municipal sector.
