Women's access and control over land, housing and property is often
a determining factor in their overall living conditions. For many women
it is essential for their everyday survival, economic security and physical
safety. It is believed to be one of the most critical factors in women's
empowerment and their struggle for equality.
Swedesurvey's project "Women's Access to Land"
Swedesurvey has been heading a project called "Women's access to land" which
was aimed at supporting the Task Force Group which was established within
_FIG in July 1998 in order to support women's access to land. The project
included seminars in a number of countries for the purpose of:
- discussing how to improve the situation for women regarding both acquisition
of land and protection of women's rights to land;
- discussing how to improve awareness amongst land surveyors in order to
have
a positive impact on this issue and;
- founding a basis for elaborating guidelines to be accepted and endorsed
by FIG. The guidelines are aimed at governments, international aid organisations,
the United Nations, development banks and non-government organisations (NGOs)
integrating gender issues into land policy, land administration systems and associated
projects, particularly in developing countries.
The reports from the seminars contain information about the situation concerning
women's access to land in the country in question, based on the findings
from the seminars and from statistics. The project was completed with in September
2002, when the final report was handed in to Sida. More activities have been
planned, see Activities within Swedesurvey's project Women's Access
to Land.
FIG Guidelines and Background Report
FIG (Federation Internationale des Geometres/International Federation of Surveyors)
is a non-government organisation whose purpose is to promote international collaboration
amongst professional surveyors. Through its commissions it seeks to improve all
aspects of surveying and the service offered by those who practice them, in the
interests of sustainable development. FIG is divided into several commissions.
FIG commissioned through the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida)
and Swedesurvey AB to develop a set of guidelines for ensuring that land reform
and land administration projects in developing countries and countries in transition
are gender inclusive. The guidelines and background report can be found at FIGs
homepage.
