Revision of 1:50 000 maps and production of orthophotos

On the 15th October 2003, Swedesurvey signed a contract with the Directorate of Survey and Mapping in Windhoek, Namibia to carry out the revision of the 1:50 000 scale topographic maps of the Karas and part of the Hardap regions in the southern part of the country, stretching from the 25th latitude down to the Orange River. The total number of map sheets to be revised is approximately 297.

The project involves the production of digital b/w orthophotos with a ground resolution of 1 metre for the whole project area, as well as large-scale colour digital orthophotos with a ground resolution of 0.25 metres for 17 major villages. The b/w orthophotos are based on available 1:80 000 scale aerial photographs, while the large-scale orthophotos are based on newly flown 1:10 000 scale photographs.

As a part of the project, Swedesurvey will also assist the Directorate in the establishment of an ITRF based reference frame. The work will comprise the measurement of 8 new Zero-order pillars, establishment of approximately 30 new points in 17 villages in the project area, and the connection of a number of existing points to the new Zero-order points.
Most of the data capture will be done in the aerial photographs using stereo-plotters although scanned farm diagrams will be used as a reference for the mapping of farm boundaries. For field verification and completion, cutting edge field equipment will be used, where data is checked out from a master database, verified in the field, and checked back into the master database.

An important component of the project is the involvement of local communities and farm owners in the verification of the captured data. To this end work material in the form of printed and geo-referenced orthophotos will be distributed and the content will be verified together with the concerned parties.
Another important component is the involvement of the staff at the Directorate in all the steps of the project in order to transfer knowledge of the methods used for the completion of the project. To achieve this, training in the usage of various types of equipment is integrated in the project, and opportunities to join the Swedesurvey staff in their day-to-day duties are provided.
