Establishment of a digital base map
Swedesurvey has signed a contract with the Survey Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority, (FCDA), Abuja for the establishment of a digital base map covering the entire Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The main tasks of the project are to carry out aerial photography of the entire FCT on high altitude – 5000 metres – and on lower altitude for urban areas, orthophoto production and mapping at scale 1:2000 and 1:10 000.
It is a two year project and an important part will be capacity building of the local staff involved in the project. A pilot office will be established at Survey Department and the staff will be trained in managing the data bases and to supply digital and analogue products to users in the society.
Study trips for the management team at Survey Department have been carried out in October 2006 and 2007.
The aerial photography has been completed and the mapping is on-going. The first orthophotos will be ready in March 2008.
The project is financed by the government of Nigeria.
