GIS Cookbook in the Philippines
Following a long tradition of successful projects implementations in the Philippines, it is now time for Swedesurvey to assist the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board, HLURB, to prepare Guidelines on how to use Geographic Information System in comprehensive land use planning and land use monitoring at local government level. HLURB is the sole national government agency tasked as the planning, regulatory and quasi-judicial body for land use development and real estate regulation. The project is sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The project nicknamed as ‘the GIS Cookbook for LGUs’, will be running for two years and main activities are to promote coordination, uniform geodata standards and metadata specification between central and local levels; develop land use planning and management tools in the decision-making process at municipal level using GIS; equip HLURB Central and Regional Planning Staff in order to improve its ability to assist LGUs in its Land Use Planning Activities using GIS.

A Project Steering Committee serves as an advisory body to resolve project related policy issues. Technical Working Groups, composed of representatives of national and regional components of HLURB and stakeholders among concerned agencies, are providing the technical inputs in developing the guidelines. Furthermore, three municipalities will furnish the project with local experiences in the field and a Project Monitoring Office is responsible for the implementation, management coordination and monitoring of the project.
